5 Easy Ways to Braid Your Hair

Start by sectioning off your hair into three equal sections. Cross one of the right-side sections over its neighbor to switch places and continue this pattern for as long as you wish – repeat as needed for an ideal braid! Repeat this process with both left and middle sections before gently pulling the braid tight with your hands before securing it with an elastic.

1. French Braid

Start your classic French Braid by starting with clean hair that is neither greasy nor dry hair and applying no-frizz hair spray for extra control. Grab a small section of hair near the crown of your head – from both right, left, and middle sides). Divide this first chunk into three equal sections. Each time one of those sections crosses over onto another, one of its parts adds a piece from any side – adding layers. Continue braiding as with a three-strand braid, crossing each section over and adding bits from either side. When you reach the base of your nape, and there is no more hair to add, complete your Braid as usual with clear hair ties to finish it off.

2. Dutch Braid

The Dutch Braid is a stunning way to add texture and volume to your hairstyle. Easy and straightforward, all it requires is starting with a thin section near your hairline and dividing it into three distinct strands before braiding. Start by braiding a three-strand braid as usual but be sure to cross both left and right sections under instead of over the center section.

3. Twisted Braid

A twisted braid is an effortless yet quick style perfect for busy days. Plus, it adds some romance and elegance to an otherwise ordinary ponytail! To create this style, start with a basic three-strand braid, adding extra hair to the forward section (near your face) before twisting it down and over the middle section. Repeat this pattern until your reach the end of your locks; tie them back with elastics once complete. This style looks its best when the strands have been colored a contrasting hue. Try an ombre or color block effect for an eye-catching and memorable style; for example, blonde strands on top can blend beautifully with dark brown in the middle and black at the bottom for an impressive ombre effect.

4. Fishtail Braid

The fishtail braid is an eye-catching style for special events or everyday wear. Though best suited to thicker locks, straighter women can try this look by creating some texture with curling irons or Drybar’s Mixologist Interchangeable Styling Iron ($199). Grip one team in each hand: suitable for right-handers, left for lefthanders, and the middle between the thumb and another finger from either hand. To create the fishtail effect, take a thin “slice” of hair from outside the right section and feed it through its outer strand, crossing this over onto its middle counterpart before repeating with the left area. After your Braid is finished, tie it back using clear elastic. Secure it further with some bobby pins for extra security, and your look is complete!
