Health concerns

British Shorthairs can suffer from gingivitis and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which thickens the heart muscle. Regular health screening of breeding stock and vaccination are important. Other concerns include gingivitis and hemophilia B.

Personality

British Shorthairs are gentle creatures that get along well with people and other pets, especially children. They don’t demand constant attention but enjoy playing with toys and solving puzzles. They are laid-back and prefer observing their surroundings while occasionally playing. They may take some time to get used to new environments and people but will show their true personalities once comfortable.

Care

British Shorthairs are well-mannered and affectionate. They don’t require excessive exercise and enjoy napping on their owners’ laps or exploring their environment. Interactive play with toys and puzzle toys can engage their minds. They also learn tricks quickly, especially when treats are involved. Finding a reputable breeder with a healthy pedigree is important, and routine veterinary visits are recommended. Pet insurance can provide coverage for unexpected medical costs.
