Trim My Own Hair at Home

Life can get busy and it may not always be possible to visit a salon; when this occurs, you may need to trim your own hair instead.

Make Sure You Have All the Right Tools

Your essential tools will include sharp hair shears (a pair of sharp hair shears will do better as they won’t cause split ends), comb, and clips. Planning out what type of haircut you would like can also help to keep things on track and limit mistakes. Your first stop when starting any haircut should be to gather the necessary equipment. A comb with fine teeth and double edges should help section off your locks; for intricate styles or layered cuts you will require thinning shears or texturizing shears in addition to regular shears; there are numerous tutorials online which may provide guidance and match your goals/hairtype better than others.

Prepare Your Hair

Trimming natural hair is completely acceptable and can be done relatively effortlessly, providing that you use appropriate tools and follow all necessary steps for a healthy trim. Stacey Ciceron, celebrity stylist, textured hair expert and ORIBE brand ambassador recommends searching out and cutting any broken strands to prevent further breakage. This process, known as Search and Destroy can be very addicting but is essential in protecting the integrity of one’s locks from further breakage. Once you have located the strands to cut, begin by trimming the bottom section with an even trim. Use a clean part and secure it using clips, scrunchies or ties so as to ensure an even trim. Comb through and secure top section as before.

Section It Out

Begin by sliding your thumbs across the top of your head from directly above one ear to its equivalent on the opposite side, creating the first section. Comb forward to separate from other areas and secure with a butterfly clip before repeating for subsequent sections if you have thick hair; move quickly so your lines are straight.

Be Careful With Your Scissors

As much as we want our scissors to cut our hair smoothly, blunt household scissors may lead to frayed ends that create split ends or cause your locks to look messy and unkempt. The best way to prevent this situation is to invest in high-quality, sharp haircutting shears. Your choice of scissors depends on the style you wish to create: for example, if you want Bardot-worthy bangs then straight blade scissors with smooth surfaces may work best; just remember to apply some lubricant periodically so as to maintain good condition of them as well as store them safely when not being used.

Be Open to Feedback

Trimming your own hair doesn’t need to be a difficult process: with proper tools and knowledge available you can keep your locks looking voluminous; just remember if anything goes wrong it will grow back quickly!
