Multiple Hairs in One Follicle

What is a hair follicle?

hair follicles are small tube-like structures within your skin that contain roots and fibers to produce the hair you see growing out. Most people have multiple follicles producing multiple hairs, but some may only have one hair per follicle.

The outer part of a follicle, called the follicular matrix, contains cells called keratinocytes and melanocytes that provide color and strength to your hair. Lower portions of strands have the hair papilla, which provides oxygen and nutrients for healthy hair growth. The shape of the follicle’s pore exit is linked to your hair’s curliness.

What causes multiple hairs in one follicle?

Having multiple hairs sprouting from one follicle is normal. Your scalp has thousands of follicles that collectively produce 1 to 5 inches, known as follicular units. Less than 20% of follicles make only one hair. Sometimes the follicle’s base becomes activated again and produces multiple strands, known as pili multigemini. The cause of this condition is unknown, but hormone fluctuations, follicle injuries, or genetics may play a role.

Are multiple hairs in one follicle normal?

Multiple hairs in one follicle are not uncommon and do not necessarily indicate medical issues. It is a regular occurrence, especially during the growth phase, when the base of the hair follicle swells and produces new hairs. This condition, pili multigemini, typically occurs on the scalp, armpits, and legs. It does not impact hair growth or cause visible symptoms but can make plucking or waxing more challenging.

Are multiple hairs in one follicle a cause for concern?

While multiple hairs emerging from one follicle may seem surprising, it is often expected and could be caused by hormonal shifts or skin conditions. Damaged follicles may also produce multiple hairs as part of multi-follicular hyperplasia, which is generally harmless. However, permanent scarring alopecia or tufting can result in hair and skin changes and should be addressed by a medical professional. Pili multigemini, another condition where multiple strands emerge from a single follicle, is usually harmless but can be damaged if pulled or shaved.
