Fleas are parasites that feed off the blood of their host. They typically live on pets but can also be found on clothes or in human hair.
They Need a Preferred Host
Fleas prefer warm-blooded mammals like cats and dogs. However, when their preferred hosts are unavailable, they may turn to humans for blood.
Fleas in Your Hair
Although it’s unlikely, fleas can live in human hair, especially on the head. They may hide in long hair or beards and cause itchy bites and red welts on the scalp or neck.
They Can Jump
Fleas are commonly associated with pets but can infest humans in flea-infested environments. They can jump far but have difficulty laying eggs on the human scalp.
They Can Lay Eggs
Contrary to popular belief, fleas can infest humans too. They gain access through contact with infested pets or unsanitary furniture. If their preferred host is absent, fleas may bite humans to survive.
They Can Live in Your Hair
Fleas may temporarily reside in human hair but cannot sustain themselves or cause lasting problems. Flea bites may be itchy, but they typically don’t lay eggs or cause infections on human heads.
