Natural bristles
Selecting the proper type of bristle for your hairbrush is an integral decision that can have lasting repercussions for its effects on how your locks appear after brushing them. There are three categories of hairbrush bristles: natural, synthetic, and combination options.
Natural boar bristle brushes are popularly known for detangling hair while giving it a healthy sheen. They work by stimulating the sebaceous glands on your scalp to redistribute natural oils throughout your strands; over time, your sebum production will even out.
As far as brush density goes, PW1 bristles from Tibet Plateau boars provide medium stiff bristles ideal for fine to medium thick hair types.
Soft bristles
Boar brushes feature soft bristles designed to be gentle on both hair and scalp, helping prevent breakage while dispersing natural oils throughout strands for a healthy glow. In fact, their bristles may even help straighten wavy or curly locks naturally!

Boar bristles come in several cuts. First Cut bristles are generally considered the healthiest option and the best benefit brushes; therefore, they tend to cost more. But they offer various styling possibilities: straight rows can be used for smoothing while cork screw style gives everything from mega volume to micro texturization – almost like giving yourself a micro perm!
Detangling
Detangling can be a rewarding experience when using the appropriate hairbrush. Knots may be stubborn, requiring gentle manipulation to clear away. If your locks are wavy or curly, try using a wooden wide-tooth comb (Tangle Teezer’s one is great!) while your locks are still damp to gently detangle them without too much pulling on your strands.
Vent brushes with boar bristles also perform exceptionally well in helping distribute natural oils from your scalp to all of your strands, without ruining curl definition. According to hairstylist Leigh Hardges, vent brushes with boar bristles may even help tame flyaways and add volume.
Nylon brushes with smooth bases can also work effectively to detangle hair, especially if your locks have fine strands. But be careful only to use it on dry hair; overzealous use could result in breakage if used too aggressively. Be sure to wash all brushes and combs regularly to prevent the build-up of bacteria and oil on their bristles!
